Standing at the corner of our property looking back the way we came, about where we built the last of the three big bonfires. All along the fence line (up to this point, but not included in this photo) is what looks like a natural swale that will be useful in catching water for the vines and trees and shrubs we'll plant along the fence to provide a screen. In this photo, however, the swale has run out, ending in a hump that I suspect is an animal burrow -- perhaps the ever-present jack rabbits live here, or maybe even the grey foxes we sometimes see running along the top of the fence, balancing on tiny feet. I hope that if we get to spend more time in the yard in the coming years, we'll get to know who lives in the neighborhood (besides humans). 29 January 2004 |
